Dental Crowns: Bringing Life Back to Damaged Teeth
Let’s face it—when you’ve got a tooth that’s cracked, worn down, or just not quite right, it’s hard to ignore. You might find yourself chewing on one side, covering your mouth when you smile, or just feeling off. We get it. That’s where dental crowns come in.
Here at Dr. Kyle F. Long’s office, we use custom-made dental crowns to protect and restore teeth that need a little extra support. Whether it’s from decay, injury, or just years of use, your tooth can feel like new again—with strength, function, and a natural look that blends right in.
Think of a crown like a fitted cap that slides right over your tooth. It acts like armor, holding everything together and preventing further damage, all while keeping your smile looking great.

When Do You Need a Crown?
You might need a crown if a filling just isn’t enough, or if your tooth is cracked, broken, or has had a root canal. It’s also a great option if a tooth has lost its shape or is discolored in a way that whitening can’t fix.
The point is: if a tooth is making daily life harder—whether it hurts, feels weak, or just looks off—a crown can give it a fresh start.
What Getting a Crown is Actually Like
The process is pretty straightforward and doesn’t involve anything scary. It typically takes two visits.
01.
During the first appointment at our Denver office, we take a close look at the tooth, clean things up, and gently shape it so the crown can fit over it perfectly. Then we take impressions, so your new crown will match your bite and your smile. You’ll leave that day with a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent one is being made.
02.
Your permanent crown is designed in a lab to match your natural tooth color and shape—it’s completely custom. Once it’s ready, you come back in, we remove the temporary, fit the new one, and bond it in place. That’s it.

What Are Crowns Made Of?
Not all crowns are the same—and that’s a good thing. Dr. Long will walk you through your options depending on which tooth needs help.
For teeth in the front that are more visible, we often recommend all-ceramic or porcelain crowns. They look really natural and blend beautifully with your other teeth. For back teeth, which do a lot of chewing, we might go with something stronger like porcelain fused to metal or zirconia.
We’ll talk through what’s best for you—not just in terms of function, but also what fits your lifestyle and your smile goals.

Aftercare: What You Should Know
Once your crown is in place, there’s not a whole lot you need to do differently. Brush and floss like normal, and come in for your regular cleanings. Crowns don’t require special treatment, but it’s smart to avoid really hard foods—like chewing ice—or using your teeth to open packages (yes, we’ve all done it).
With good care, most crowns last 10 to 15 years, and sometimes even longer. We’ll keep an eye on it at your checkups to make sure everything stays in great shape.
